Makayla Jo | 1 month update | April 9, 2012

Makayla turned 1 month old on April 9, 2012. Here are a few updates!

  • We haven't been to the doctor since her two week appointment, but at two weeks she weighed 7 lbs 9 ounces, up from her birth weight 6 lbs, 13 ounces (dropped to 6 lbs, 3 oz at hospital discharge). My guess is she is around 9 lbs right now.
  • We went to grandma & grandpa's house a lot and there we found out that she LOVES classical music. Thanks grandpa! We play the classical music channel on our tv for her to fall asleep at night.
  • We found out that she HATES being swaddled at night and she HAS to have her hands up by her face when she sleeps.
  • Her belly button fell off within our first 3 days home. I have no idea where it is.
  • We went to my work twice this month, and everyone loved meeting her!
  • Grandma has stayed the night at least once a week helping me while Daddy works overnight.
  • We have gone on lots of walks, around the neighborhood, Discovery Lake, Mission Bay, and through the campground by the beach.
  • Makayla has been eating 3 ounces of formula every 3 hours or so. Now, (she is 5 weeks as I am writing this) she is drinking 4 ounces every 4 hours.
  • Makayla has been sleeping in 3-4 hour stretches at night. Last night she had a 5 hour stretch and then a 3 hour stretch and I feel amazing today!
  • For some reason, every time we try to move upstairs (I was on the couch initially due to my c-section) she has an awful night. So, we are still camped out downstairs. Hey, if she sleeps better, that means I get more sleep and we are all happy. She will transition to her room eventually, hopefully within the next month or so.
  • This month, we traded in our old car and got a SUV cause we needed a family car.
  • I have my back-to-work date set: May 21, 2012. That will be twelve weeks. While I am excited about going back to work full time as a nurse, I am actually kind of sad this time is going by so fast.
  • As for me, at 5 weeks post-partum I am 8 lbs away from my pre-pregnancy weight. I really have not lost any weight for the past 3 weeks, even with walking 2-3 miles per day. My pre-pregnancy jeans fit, although I have quite the muffin-top. My appetite definitely is not the same as it used to be, I forget to eat often and when I do eat, nothing tastes the way it used to. I just don't have much interest in food anymore. But, this isn't helping my weight loss so I'm not sure what is going on. I hope to be cleared next week at my 6 week PP appointment to start exercising again.

Makayla Jo's Birth Story | March 9, 2012 | 10:04 p.m. | 6 lbs, 13 oz. | 19.5 inches long

This blog has been primarily used for my business, but I am going to also document our new daughter's life here as well. I hope I don't lose any readers :)

Here I am, a month later, ready to document her birth story. Her birth was a very traumatic experience for me and as much as I want to forget some details, it was also one of the happiest days of my life and I want to remember it all.

On Wednesday, March 7, 2012, the husband and I went into labor & delivery around 9:30 p.m. because I was contracting about 2-7 minutes apart. They monitored me for about an hour, and ultimately I was sent home because I was only 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced and the contractions were not consistent enough. They did comment that M was not very "reactive" so they gave me some cranberry juice and ice water and then she started moving all around. We went home disappointed, but in my heart I knew that it just wasn't time yet.  On Thursday, the contractions were still there but they weren't exactly very painful. Thursday afternoon my husband had an awards ceremony at work and I remember sitting there contracting throughout the entire 2 hour ceremony. Thursday night is when the contractions became more intense. I had an OB/GYN appointment on Friday morning at 9 a.m. so it was my goal to just wait until the appointment to see how dilated I was.

On Friday, March 9, 2012, I went to my dr. appointment at 9 a.m. I had her check me and I was still only 1 cm but 80% effaced. My dr. stripped my membranes to "get things moving along" and we also set up my induction date for March 19! I left the appointment very disappointed. I remember thinking that I was going to be pregnant forever and that she was never going to come! That day, I did lots to stay busy. I remember reading that eggplant parmesean can induce labor so my sister, her boyfriend, my mom and I went to Macaroni Grill for lunch that day joking that the eggplant was going to bring on active labor! After that, the husband and I went to home depot to pick out new toilets, something we have been wanting to do since we bought our house in September. At this point, the contractions were coming about 3-5 minutes apart and becoming VERY intense, I remember having a hard time walking through them while in Home Depot! My sister's boyfriend replaced all of our toilets and my sister and I went for a walk around the block. I knew this baby was going to come soon! My sister and her boyfriend left our house around 4:30 p.m. and I told her we were probably going to go back into L&D that night and I would let them know. I was very adimant about not letting anyone know I was going to the hospital until I was actually admitted because I didn't want them to get their hopes up and I was terrified of getting sent home again!

My husband and I waited at home until about 6 p.m. when I couldn't take it anymore and then we headed into Palomar Hospital. Of course we were stuck in Friday Night traffic on the way there. I knew I was only 1 cm that morning so I was terrified of still being only 1 cm but I was in SO MUCH PAIN! Once we got there, we were sent to Exam Room 1, where they hooked me up to the monitors. The nurse told me straight off the bad that if I was still 1cm I would be sent home. She checked me right away and I was 2cm and 100% effaced. At least all this pain was doing something, but I couldn't believe I was only 2cm. Then she hooked me up to the monitors, and right away, baby M had a deceleration of her heart rate into the 50s. The nurse seemed concerned and wondered if it was my heart rate. There is no way it was my heart rate, I was in so much pain that mine was well over 100. The nurse left the room and kept me hooked up. She came back in about 20 minutes later saying they were going to monitor me for awhile to see if baby M's heart rate dropped again. Right as she was in there saying that, her heart rate dropped again. The nurse called for help immediately, told me I would be admitted right away, and to plan on having an emergency c-section. About five nurses rushed in the room, starting my IV, giving me oxygen, putting me in a gown, etc. They had my husband start filling out paperwork. The on-call doctor came in right away and explained what was going on and to be prepared for a c-section, very soon.

I was admitted and transfered to a L&D room from the triage room. At this point, I told my husband to call our families as this baby was going to be here very soon! Luckily our families are all within 30 minutes of the hospital and they got there rather quickly. At this time it was about 8:00 p.m. The doctor then broke my water and I waited for the anistesiologist for the epidural. They also put an internal heart rate monitor on baby's head to get a more accurate reading then the external monitor. After my water broke the contractions were unbearable. Thank goodness I got the epidural rather quickly. After that, our families started to arrive, probably around 8:30-9:00 p.m. I remember them coming into the room and I was just crying so scared for baby M. Dr. Cantu pretty much never left my room the entire time, which made me realize how serious this was. I also had 2 nurses in there the entire time. At some time, probably around 9:45 p.m., baby M's heart rate dropped again. Dr. Cantu called for an emergency c-section and I was being transferred to a gurney and rolled into the OR within 5 minutes. I remember waving to our families and just crying so scared and terrified.

After that, everything is pretty much a blur. I remember my husband coming in and sitting by my head, and I remember Dr. Cantu telling him to stand up to watch his daughter being born. Makayla Jo was born at 10:04 p.m. (6 lbs, 13 ounces and 19.5 inches long) and started crying right away, which was the best sound I have ever heard.
I was absolutely terrified

My sweet baby
We had kept her name a secret from everyone, I remember telling my husband that he could tell our families her name without me. I was then rolled to recovery while he went with our new baby to introduce them to our families and to the nursery. This was absolutely the hardest part for me. I felt terrible, like I was just cut open, and my baby was taken away from me, which she was. I was in recovery for three hours before I had a chance to hold her. My entire family met her before I could even bond with her. That was very hard. I was rolled into my hospital room around 1:00 a.m. and our families were still there waiting for me. My husband held M the entire time, and didn't let anyone else hold her until I had a chance to hold her, which was amazing of him.
Proud Daddy
Both Grandma's and Aunt Stephie meeting Makayla for the first time!

Waiting for me, grandpa dying to hold her!
Totally drugged up and out of it in our first photo as a family of three.
I recovered from my c-section pretty quickly, but was required to stay in the hospital for three nights. They were awful! I hated being in the hospital, I didn't get any sleep, and couldn't wait to go home. I can't believe she's going to be a month old tomorrow. 1 month update coming soon!
